Want A Small Dog? Choose A Yorkie Puppy

If you want one of the smallest dog breeds, you should consider getting a Yorkie puppy. Below is information about this breed so you can decide if a Yorkie would be right for you and your family.

Their Personality

It is important to know the personality of a breed to ensure it will mesh well with family members. Yorkshire Terriers may be small, but they are still domineering, feisty, and have a lot of energy. Yorkies demand a lot of attention and are affectionate. Because of this, if the dog will be left home alone for much of the time, you should reconsider your lifestyle and how a Yorkie would fit into your regular routine. If you are the type of person that will be home much of the time and plan to spend a lot of time cuddling and playing with your dog, a Yorkie would be perfect for you.

Yorkies are great watchdogs and will bark if they sense danger. If you have small children, however, they may become snappy towards them if the children do not treat the dog gently. If you have other small animals in your home, the Yorkie may become aggressive towards them. This is not always the case, however, as some Yorkies live peacefully with dogs in the home, and some may even get along with cats. The best thing for you is to bring the dog home for a test run to see how it interacts with your children, other pets, etc.

Yorkshire Terrier Care

Yorkshire Terriers need exercise just like any other dog. Because they are small, this is not hard to provide for them. You should still consider taking them on walks and playing with them outside at times. Purchase toys for inside your home to keep them busy. Interactive toys always work well and can be purchased at pet stores or online. If you live in an apartment, a Yorkie would be a good choice for you.

One benefit of a Yorkshire Terrier is they do not shed a lot. This makes these dogs a good choice for people that have allergies. You still need to comb their hair regularly to keep it looking nice and in good shape. You have the choice of keeping their coat clipped or letting it grow long. If you have it clipped brushing a couple of times per week will suffice. If their coat is kept long, you will need to brush them daily and, in some cases, more than once a day. Take them to a groomer more often if they have a long coat.
