How To Potty Train Your Puppy In Winter

Finding coton de tulear puppies for sale and getting a new puppy can bring a lot of warmth and excitement to your home. However, potty training your puppy in the winter can present a few challenges. Knowing how to create the proper environment and train your puppy will limit the amount of accidents in your home.

Create a Space

Your puppy needs a safe place to go to the bathroom. In the snow, this is especially important. Winter may be new to your puppy and many puppies dislike the snow and cold. To create a space, you should clear enough of an area that your puppy can eliminate at least several times. Shovel to remove snow and debris. This may seem like a lot of work if your area gets a lot of snow, but clearing a spot allows your puppy easier access to smells to train them to go outside.

Keep Your Puppy Comfortable

If your dog is smaller, or has a thinner coat, you'll have to keep your puppy warm. A small puppy sweater or coat will work great for this. Even with a coat, you'll have to monitor your puppy to make sure it doesn't begin to shiver. Puppy boots may also be an option to keep your puppy comfortable. However, these boots may require frequent washing while your puppy learns to potty properly. If your puppy still seems to be struggling with the cold, you may have to set up an indoor potty area for it.

Make A Snowed-In Haven

Sometimes the weather is just too severe, or your puppy isn't ready to tackle the snow. However, you can still make valuable progress toward training your puppy in severe weather. Ideally, you want to set this area up as close to the door as possible to teach your puppy to go to the door when they need to use the bathroom.

To establish an indoor potty area, you'll need puppy training pads and an optional training pad tray. In the beginning, you may not want to change the puppy pad after every use. Much like training your puppy to go outside, having a previous elimination on the pad can help teach your puppy where to go.

After the harsh weather is gone, you can move the puppy pads outside to teach your puppy how to use the grass. Eventually, you can do away with the puppy pads and your puppy will use the grass like normal.

With any training method it's important to reward your puppy. You can use treats, verbal praise, or play to reward your pup for a job well done.
